NOTES VS BOOKS
The most common confusion among the GATE aspirants is "Where should they study from ?" . Its a major decision which everyone has to take. Its not going to affect the final GATE score but the HARD WORK needed to will vary. Both have their own PROS and CONS.I am going to share my way of doing it.
First of all Pro's and Con's of both :-
- NOTES are precise and short. They cover "ALMOST" every topic and in short.
- NOTES are NOT good for those who are studying subject for the FIRST TIME
- NOTES might miss some important topics and too much dependency is going to harm you for sure unless you have made them yourself
- NOTES are best for REVISION and saves alot of TIME
- Best for FIRST timers
- TIME wastage in search of topics
- Every topic is present in books ,one just has to search it
- Better understanding and Easier than NOTES due to presence of illustrations
- NOT GOOD for revision purposes
HOW DID I DO IT ?
For the first time i.e. during graduation , It is very important to study the well known books as the base for entire engineering is built up from there.Without reading the core books ,don't even think of GATE. One time deep reading and understanding is must otherwise notes, coaching etc. will be of no use.
After that, I analysed previous years and I separated all the subjects based upon their average weightage and question levels.
According to Average Marks Distribution:
MATHEMATICS=APTITUDE+ENGLISH > SOM >THERMODYNAMICS >FM > PRODUCTION TECHNOLOGY > HT >TOM > MECHANICS >INDUSTRIAL* > MACHINE DESIGN
*Varies annually
Aptitude : I solved previous year problems and they were easy , so I didn't practice.
English : My father is a English Lecturer , you can understand.
SOM : My concepts were already good. I studied from NOTES except SFD&BMD from book
Thermodynamics : P.K. Nag , Prepared my own notes from book
FM: I was week in this subject but my coaching teacher was awesome , So I played a gamble and studied from NOTES only !
PT : Read theory from notes and did previous years from GATE 2000 thrice questions are repeated every year
HT : Entirely from BOOK
TOM : NOTES
Mechanics : Books - Study this from book only !
Industrial : NOTES Don's leave a single topic from this subject , questions are easy and time saving and before going deeper in any topic , see previous years first and study accordingly.
Machine Design : I studied only a few topics like welding joints ,factor of safety, and a few more , I completed this subject in December and allotted only days to it as I was behind schedule. Just saw previous years and studied all those topics on which questions were asked
REMEMBER : Don't leave a single topic in the GATE EXAM , If you are not able to manage , atleast study the previous year topics and 75% chances are that you will be able to do that question

except vector calculus from B.S. Grewal too.
